Define a Small Project Scope

Avoid ambiguous deliverables and constant rework. Read a concrete example, examine the trade-offs, and try a small exercise to see whether the principle applies to your situation.

The working principle

  • Start here. Write what is included and explicitly excluded.
  • Add context. Define an observable completion criterion.
  • Keep in mind. Track requested changes separately from agreed work.

A workplace example

A small website update can be defined as “add a contact page, test mobile menu and publish by Friday,” while explicitly excluding a full redesign. Without exclusions, every new idea risks becoming part of the deadline.

BlogJD editorial perspective

Clear boundaries are a practical protection against unfinished projects disguised as endless improvement.

A new idea may be valuable, but it should be recorded as a proposed change with a cost, deadline effect and owner. Keeping optional requests separate from agreed deliverables prevents a supposedly small task from becoming an endless redesign.

Control changes rather than pretending they will not happen

“Improve the website” does not tell a builder when the job is finished. “Publish the contact page, verify the header on three mobile widths, and confirm a non-existent URL returns 404” is a set of testable outputs. Every delivery criterion should have a clear way to verify it.

Define acceptance before the work begins

Common failure points

A scope statement does not eliminate the need to reassess when important safety or compliance requirements emerge. It should make changes visible, not prohibit them.

Put it into practice

Write one sentence for the outcome, three deliverables, three non-goals and one acceptance test. Revisit the list before starting unexpected work.
